The Fine Art of Photographing Children at Weddings

At Albert Postel, we adore photographing children at weddings. Their honest zeal for life and childlike enthusiasm comes across beautifully on camera.

There is nothing more adorable than a cute flower girl grasping her basket tighter than life, or a handsome little man holding the precious ring pillow waiting for his debut down the aisle. Capturing children is one of the treasures we as Los Angeles wedding photographers love about our job, but knowing how to do it right helps us do our job even better.

There is no “wrong” way to take a child’s photo, for their cuteness and playful nature is loved by the camera. But, there is a right way to make those precious moments larger than life. The photos that capture the chance moments you may never see again are those you will cherish for a lifetime.

If you want a little inside information on how we capture the precious moments of the children in your wedding, here are some of our professional photography tips:

Assess Personalities

The moment I meet your children, I will know their distinct personalities. This is one of the many traits of an experienced wedding photographer. By knowing their personalities, you know how to approach each child to keep them feeling relaxed and like themselves.

The kids with buoyant personalities light up the camera and keep us on our toes. However, the shyer children need a gentler approach so we can capture the essence of their beauty without catching them off guard.

Get Down to Their Level

Children are very perceptive and they know when someone is connecting with them. I like to crouch down to their level before I take a shot to let them know I am someone they can trust and also to get a more personal photo. Once we establish that rapport and I make them feel comfortable, they know that when I am following them around, they can feel right at home. This is how I can get the perfect shot because the children are free to act natural. I can capture their true personalities which results in timeless wedding photographs.

Don’t Pre-judge a Moment

Some wedding photographers stop shooting when a child starts eating or gets a little rowdy. Here at Albert Postel, we know some of the best shots happen when children are in their natural element.

Whether stuffing their face at the table, or throwing a temper tantrum in front of mom, even if there is no smile, some of the cutest and most creative pictures come at the strangest moments.

The most important aspect to photographing young children at a wedding is to allow them to interact naturally, even when posing them for photos. When the wedding photographer is familiar with the personality and demeanor of the child, he/she will know how to pose them so they feel comfortable and also be right there when they make a candid expression that steals hearts.

Below are some of our most precious children’s wedding photos from our photography portfolio. We hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed shooting them!

  1. The few pictures you have posetd here yesterday are truly exceptional. From the few meetings (pre-wedding in Tennille’s absence) with you you showed true professionalism & organizational skills. You arrived at our home in Westville knew exactly what you wanted in pictures and went right to it You kept Tennille calm & collective and of course ignored the heat wave that overcame us that day (especially in church whew!!)and many outdoor pictures taken The pictures are truly beautiful, and I just can’t wait to see the remainder of them You are definitely highly recommended in my books
