Traditional vs. Photojournalistic Photography

If you are nearing your wedding day and searching for photographers, you most likely have heard the term “photojournalistic.” Most Los Angeles wedding photographers offer this type of photography simply because it differs from the traditional, posed shots and adds some variety to the wedding pictures.

Which one is best for your wedding? Before you answer that question, you should understand the difference between the two styles.

Traditional Photography for Weddings

Traditional wedding photography involves formal, posed shots where a wedding photographer positions people to look towards the camera and smile. These shots are pre-planned and require some thought to set up and direct.

Though traditional photos are customary in most weddings, they fail to display the personalities and raw beauty of people in their natural element. Every wedding should have some traditional photos to put over the mantle and grace wedding albums. But, the addition of candid shots adds another dimension of uniqueness.

Photojournalistic Photography

Photojournalistic photography can be described as telling a story with photos. The wedding photographer does not pose the subjects, but captures moments without any preparation.

A trained eye knows exactly when to take a picture so it does not look posed and it shows off the unique personality of the subject. These photos capture the “real” memories, and for couples they help to freeze-frame moments in time they will never get to see again.

Here at Albert Postel, our modern photographers love to shoot photojournalistic photos. On your wedding day, we place ourselves in ideal locations and are ready and prepared to take that million dollar shot just as no one is looking.

When our clients view their wedding photos for the first time, the ones that bring tears to their eyes are the un-posed, candid shots. They look in amazement because it’s as if they are transported back to that day and viewing it from entirely different eyes. They get to see what was happening as they were busy dancing, greeting guests, and saying their vows.

Which style is best for you? This will depend on your preferences. At Albert Postel, we shoot a mixture of the two styles to create an overall memorable experience.
